Joyride and HTM launch bike share in The Hague, expanding public transit offering

Toronto | May 15, 2019 – Joyride and Dutch transit agency HTM have announced a partnership to launch dockless bike sharing in The Hague. HTM, one of Europe’s oldest public transit agencies, has joined forces with Joyride, the leading micromobility platform, to expand its transit offerings and launch the official bike-share system of The Hague. HTM’s new smart fleet of dockless bicycles will enable riders to effortlessly connect between multiple transportation modes across the entire city.

The fleet pairs Joyride’s sophisticated software platform in combination with electronic bike locks that will allow users to unlock and lock bikes using HTM’s mobile app. Riders will be able to see nearby bicycles, as well as reserve them in advance while planning their daily commutes. This initiative marks a new expansion for the historic transit operator.

Jaap Bierman, Director of HTM, is enthusiastic about HTM bicycles. “It’s a very nice system. With your mobile phone you download an app, with which you can open the lock and reserve a bike every half an hour or for a whole day,” says Bierman.

According to Bierman, the big advantage of HTM two-wheelers is that you can take them anywhere. “The great thing is that you can pick it up at one stop and deliver it to the other. You therefore do not have to take it back to where you picked it up. That is an advantage over, for example, the public transport bicycle.”

At a fraction of the cost of traditional docking stations and with fleet management technology built into the framework, the Joyride platform will enable easy operations and flexibility while delivering a higher tier of service for all HTM customers.

“We’re thrilled to partner with a transit agency in The Netherlands, where cycling history is ingrained in the culture. With a world-class transit agency like HTM, we have an opportunity to enable the next generation of mobility in The Hague,” says Vince Cifani, Founder of Joyride. “We see the future of mobility as the merger between larger modalities of transportation, like trains and buses, with the efficiency and elegance of shared micro-transportation.”

As mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) providers become more common, HTM has taken steps to ensure it helps champion the coming age of sustainable multimodal transportation through this agreement.
