Scooter-share licenses: Get your permit on!

Launching a scooter-share rental business in a city will almost always requires a permit.

Most cities will put out a Request for Proposal (RFP) related to a pilot project with scooters. This essentially means that they ask companies and citizens to submit a business plan for their fleet in the event that they are interested in launching in the city. Note: an RFP is not required for you to apply for a permit.

These pilot projects will usually limit the maximum number of scooters that will be available on the streets. Permits are usually awarded to multiple operators to test viability.

Permit fees vary depending on the municipality. It is important to take into consideration the cost of the application. For example, the city of Portland’s fees for their pilot project were as follows:

Certain cities may have additional requirements. Ensure you read the documentation carefully.

It’s not rocket science, but it is scooter science. Come in prepared and be one step ahead of everyone else.

Conclusion

  2. Know which scooter you’re going to use, how you’re going to maintain it, how your customers can reach you and how you’re going to rebalance the scooters around the city.
